X0082-S 1ST WORLD WAR SKETCH BOOK - A

1ST WORLD WAR SKETCH BOOK - A

Superb small sketch book (7 1/4 x 4 1/2 ins) featuring 75 pages of detailed pencil (some inked-over) drawings. From details written at the front of the book, we have been able to determine that these were drawn by Ordinary Seaman TAPLIN who was a member of the crew of the Second Class Protected Cruiser, HMS HIGHFLYER.

This light cruiser was to play an extremely important part in the 1st World War ! It was the 4th HMS Highflyer to be built and was launched on June 1889. After trials, it went to the East Indies and became the Flagship of the East Indies Fleet from 1900-1904. From 1904-06 it was a cadet training ship in the West Indies and from 1906-08 returned to the East Indies but not as Flagship. From 1908-10 it returned to Devonport as a reserve ship before returning as Flagship once again in the East Indies from 1911-13.

In 1914, with the threat of war looming, the ship joined the 9th Cruiser Squadron at Devonport. On 4th August 1914, the day that Great Britain declared war on Germany, HMS Highflyer captured the German liner Trabantia, which was carrying bullion, and escorted her back to Plymouth.
On the 27th August 1914 she encountered the armed German liner Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse. On refusing to surrender, a 90 minute battle ensued and the German liner was sunk. This was believed to be the first surface action by a British warship in WWI !

After the war she became the Flagship of the East Indies Fleet once more and was eventually broken up in Bombay in 1921.

As you can see, this was a very important ship in the history of the war and these delightful sketches from an ordinary seaman are a wonderful reminder of those days. There are drawings of many of the characters that he must have come across in the East and West Indies and, allied with the other sketch book for sale by the same seaman, are a wonderful historical pictorial diary of those days nearly 100 years ago !

If you wish to see any more of the sketches, pse email me for scans.
